The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major honors show nears, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
