Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
